Important Notice
Effective September 1, 2008 Continuing Education Will Be Required To Renew Your License
- All Cosmetology licensees who renew on or after September 1, 2008 must show the completion of at least 6 hours of continuing education.
- All Esthetician licensees who renew on or after September 1, 2008 must show the completion of at least 6 hours of continuing education.
- All Nail Tech licensees who renew on or after September 1, 2008 must show the completion of at least 6 hours of continuing education.
- Licensee must obtain a Certificate of Completion for each class completed.
- These hours MUST include at least four (4) hours of Sanitation instruction.For late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the two year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.
**Licensees may not receive continuing education credit for attending the same course more than once for one renewal period. Further, licensees must retain a copy of the certificate of completion for a course for two year after the date of completion. In conducting any inspection or investigation of the licensee, the Department may examine the licensee records to determine compliance.
TDLR approved continuing education (CE) hours will be required to renew a cosmetology license that expires on or after September 1, 2006. The hours required must be completed within the term of the license being renewed. For example, if a license expires on September 15, 2006, the hours must have been completed between September 15, 2004 and September 15, 2006.

Texas State Regulations
The state requires your completed CE hours are reported within seven days.
All Cosmetology licensees who renew on or after September 1, 2008 must show the completion of at least 6 hours of continuing education.

Is Brushing Causes Hair Loss ?
There are many hair myths floating out there some of which are followed religiously by women totally unaware of the validity or invalidity of these myths.
Brushing the hair stimulates the hair follicles to produce more hair. It does cause fiction against the hair and scalp so it is important to do it gently and use a brush of good quality. Just yanking away at the hair causes hair breakage and split ends, rather than actual hair loss. As in anything, not everything about hair care should be believed. Sometimes, what seems like good advice is only a hair care myth. Be informed.
Shampooing Daily Dries the Hair
Some believe that shampooing everyday dries the hair out. This is not true. What could dry the hair out would be the shampoo that is being used, so it is important to choose a shampoo that is suitable for the hair type. Oily hair needs to be washed everyday to get the excess oil out. However, dry hair need not be given the same treatment

To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, honorees must have developed or established leadership, products or education to enhance the cosmetology profession in Texas; or exhibited greatly in the legislative, professional or artistic processes of the cosmetology field.
According to a press release, in 1979, Glen Nealeigh of Abilene, Jessie Lee Sharpley of Lubbock, and Lee Self of El Paso became the first inductees into the Hall of Fame. In 1987, Simone Campagone of Houston was named, followed in 1992 by Dale Johns, Amarillo; Larry Johnson, Houston; Jeri Herne-Skaggs, Abilene; and Jimmie Kay Kennedy, Abilene.
The last two inductees were Jonnie McCoy of Fort Worth and Mae Whitley of Dallas (1996).
Continuing Education for Cosmetology License Renewals
One requirement to renew your Texas cosmetology license is you must complete department-approved continuing education (C.E.) courses. Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 1602.354(a) sets out the law governing CE for cosmetology: The commission will by rule recognize, prepare, or administer continuing education programs for the practice of cosmetology. Participation in the programs is mandatory for all license renewals.
Although the number of required CE hours may differ by license type there are four CE hours that are common to all cosmetology licensees. Two (2) hours in Sanitation and 2 hours in Texas cosmetology laws and rules are required for everyone renewing a cosmetology license.
It is easy to understand the importance of refreshing your knowledge about proper sanitation; you want to keep your clients healthy and your reputation spotless. But, you may wonder why you have to take a cosmetology laws and rules course every renewal period. After all, depending on the license you hold while in school you may have as many as 100 hours of "orientation, rules and laws" in the operator's course, ten (10) hours of required laws and rules in the hair braiding/hair weaving/wig/shampoo and conditioning curriculums or somewhere in-between.
This past June the Texas Legislature adjourned until January 2013, but during the session they passed Senate Bill 1170 which added several new cosmetology laws and made changes to others. A few examples of the changes in the bill include:
•Changed "Facialist" term to "Esthetician" (effective immediately),
•Created a specialty license in eyelash extension application (target date February 2012),
•Establishing a Cosmetology Operator to Barber Crossover license (target date February 2012),
•New Paths to Earn a Cosmetology Instructor license (target date February 2012).
CE courses include information about changes to existing laws and address the new laws passed this session. And, CE providers will continue to refresh your memory concerning the laws and rules that most often appear in TDLR's list of "Top Ten Cosmetology Violations."
